On Our Devotion to Cordovan Shell Cordovan, the Diamond of Leather Shell cordovan is one of the most distinctive and highly regarded materials in the world of leather. Often called simply “cordovan” or “shell cordovan,” it is made from a dense, glossy layer found beneath the hide near the horse’s rump. This layer, known as the shell, is carefully extracted and finished to create a leather with exceptional density, durability, and surface recovery. Unlike many leathers where the usable surface layer is relatively thin, shell cordovan is valued for the remarkable thickness and compact structure of its shell layer. This gives the material its unique firmness, smooth feel, deep luster, and ability to recover from fine marks over time. Because only two small oval-shaped shells can be obtained from a single horsehide, shell cordovan is naturally limited in supply. Its rarity, combined with the time and skill required to produce it, is part of what makes it so special. Depending on the tannery, shell cordovan is traditionally tanned over a long period using vegetable tanning methods. Makers such as Horween in the United States, and Shell Cordovan Toscana and Rocado in Italy, are known for producing cordovan through time-intensive processes that involve natural materials, aniline dyeing, and glazing to achieve its signature depth and shine. Shell cordovan has long been loved by enthusiasts of fine shoes and small leather goods. Today, it continues to attract not only established brands, but also independent makers around the world who are drawn to its rare character, distinctive aging, and unmistakable presence. CORDOVAN SHOP Specialty Leather Supply, Curated in Seoul Cordovan Shop is a specialty leather supply store operated by JnK-handworks Co., Ltd., the manufacturer behind Arte di mano, a handmade leather brand based in Seoul, South Korea. Based inside Arte di mano Seoul House, our shop brings together the perspective of makers and the practical needs of those who rely on shell cordovan as a functional material. Since 2009, we have explored shell cordovan through our own hands — importing, cutting, crafting, testing, and learning from this unique material from the perspective of makers. Shell cordovan is beautiful, but it is not an easy material. Its surface, density, oil content, thickness, color variation, and natural differences all require careful understanding. Through years of hands-on experience, we aim to share its true character with clarity and honesty. Centered around carefully selected shell cordovan from the United States and Italy, we supply specialty leathers and maker-ready materials for leatherworkers, archers, and small studios around the world. Our shell cordovan has also been used by Korean gold medalist archers and specialized archery schools, where the material is valued not only for its rarity and beauty, but also for its smooth surface, durability, and performance.
